At Woodland, we teach Spanish in line with the National Curriculum. We value every member of our school community and our aims are for every child, inclusively, to have the support they need to learn a Modern Foreign Language.
In line with our Mission Statement, prioritising learning in a safe and caring environment, we aim to teach MFL as a part of the school curriculum in order to facilitate the learning of languages throughout the children’s lives.
Studying a language provides the children with essential skills to develop and flourish in our modern, global society. Learning a MFL helps promote and develop a broader inter-cultural understanding; supports children’s literacy and oracy by raising their awareness of how languages ‘work’ and develops a sound base from which they can learn other languages.
The National Curriculum states learning a foreign language is a liberation from insularity and provides an opening to other cultures. A high-quality languages education should foster pupils’ curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world. The teaching should enable pupils to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and to understand and respond to its speakers, both in speech and in writing. It should also provide opportunities for them to communicate for practical purposes, learn new ways of thinking and read great literature in the original language. Language teaching should provide the foundation for learning further languages, equipping pupils to study and work in other countries.
